About the Author
Brainard Carey is an artist, teacher, walker, and pool player. He cofounded the artistic collaborative Praxis with his wife, Delia Carey. As host of the popular Yale University radio show Lives of the Artists, he has interviewed more than one thousand artists and creative people to illuminate their careers and work. He is passionate about art education and has written several books for artists to develop their careers, including Making It in the Art World, New Markets for Artists, and The Art World Demystified, Fund Your Dream Like a Creative Genius, Sell Online Like a Creative Genius. He also co-founded Praxis Center for Aesthetics, an online school for professional artists. He lives in New York City.

Let me begin at the end: it came as a most pleasant surprise to find at the conclusion of this charming and insightful book, a list of recommended and very unexpected readings that represent many of the author's personal inspirations. This list starts with a novel by Brazilian author Claire Lispector, a star in the international avant-garde literary firmament, and makes it way through Marcus Aurelius, a DaVinci biography, Ortega y Gasset, Emerson, and so on in a similar vein for several pages. I would say in earnest that this is man of fine intelligence and anything he writes is worthy of our attention. This reading list alone is worth the price of the book!As regards the book in hand (though at the moment it is lying against my chest, between me and my laptop!) I found it extremely thoughtful. I have a fair amount of experience marketing and selling online (beginning in 1995 selling limited edition books and fine art photography) and I can honestly say that I wish I had had this book in hand on the day I began my efforts. Initially, Carey's advice seems common sense. But, as my HS math teacher loved to say, common sense is not so common. The complexity of successful online marketing reveals itself slowly, but by the end you have learned the essentials and are well prepared to fill in the blanks as they may pertain to your own unique product or service.What I found most helpful were the take-aways at the end of each chapter. Again, seemingly simple ideas ultimately joined together into a comprehensive and invaluable to-do list. We simply have to be sure to check each box on this list in order, as we develop a marketing plan for our own products. It reminds me of the remarkable drop in the spread of infectious diseases in hospitals as doctors and nurses were required to adhere to a check list of ten or so profoundly simplistic tasks, like washing hands on the way in and the way out of the patient's room, things you would have expected them to do automatically... but didn't.All in all, I highly recommend this book. You can rely on it!
Not as advertised. It's basically useless. Waste of money -- noting in it that you can't pick up from life -- a scam. Buyer beware.
If the words ‘Funnels’ and ‘Lead magnets’ or the sight of Facebook analytics send you running, Sell Online Like a Creative Genius is the book for you. Brainard Carey breaks the process down to its bare bones, giving readers exactly and only what they need to know and do to start selling online - either by building an audience on social media or using a platform that comes with an existing audience like Ebay or Amazon.Beginning with the opening overview and drilling down to the what, how and why throughout the book, Carey tackles Facebook advertising and challenges, copywriting and ad design, building a mailing list and how to maintain growth, often sharing his own experiences. Each chapter also contains a roundup of takeaways and a section for notes.Creating art is hard. Selling is even harder. As Carey states in the introduction, you need a plan, determination and ambition along with managing your vision when setbacks occur. This book can’t help you with your mindset or work ethic (although it does provide inspirational quotes about the selling process by creatives, experts and thought leaders throughout), but what it can do and does is provide the nuts and bolts of creating a successful online sales strategy.
With my read of the first half of this little book, I give it four stars. The writer who wrote that “this book is useless and a scam†was obviously a bot or completely unmotivated seller of a product. I gained several valid tips that will help me improve the effectiveness of my online ads and sales. I’m eager to continue reading. I find Carey’s advice is no nonsense and to the point. Take the tips, use them, increase your product’s exposure!
When I saw that Brainard Carey had written a new book I was excited to get a copy. I have read his previously publshed books and have worked with him as a consultant. Brainard has a unique quality for breaking ideas down and giving you all the information he has available-not leaving anything out.One of the things I appreciate about Brainard is that he wants you to be successful. With that in mind he lays out what you need to know about selling online. He covers the basics, making sales, funnels, growing funnels, what happens if they stall, ads, email marketing and much more. Then it’s your turn to take the ideas and information - use what interests you and do the work.At the end of the chapters are “takeaways†-valuable questions to answer that will help define your specific plan-what you can do to get there and inspire yourself to action. Chapter takeaways allow you to line up your thoughts and define what you want.Selling online can be daunting for an anyone and especially artists. Brainard Carey’s book-“Sell Online - Like a Creative Genius†could assist you in being successful. There is a great deal of information here to get you started and if you are already working on online sales-there are ideas to add to your tool box. Brainard has worked his way through this process and adds his personal experiences. If you want to get started selling your art online this is a good book to get you going.
