Why do we think of American Indians as wearing feather headdresses and living in tepees? L.G. Moses explores this question in his examination of one of the major contributors to the image of Native Americans, namely the wild west show. These show, organized by Buffalo Bill and others, were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presenting Plains Indian culture as Indian culture, they made an indelible impression on audiences in the United States and Europe. Moses also the participation of Native Americans as a way to make a living and to preserve their culture. This analysis is interesting if controversial, but for me the great value of the book is in attention to the way that wild west shows contributed to the formation of the popular perception of what an "Indian" is like.
