If you are interested in the Roman quarries and other antiquities of Egypt's Eastern Desert, the region's natural history, and/or ethnography of the Bedouin dating to the 1940s, this is a must-read volume. Leo's exacting observations of all that was around him in this desert wilderness become poetry in this gifted hands. Leo was one of the great desert explorers, but he was above all humble, and never sought the glory that other explorers did. I had the good fortune of knowing Leo in the last decade of his life. His love of the Khushmaan Ma'aza Bedouin of the Eastern Desert carried him through the difficult times following his wife Margie's passing. I was able to ferry letters to and from his then-still living Ma'aza friends, and he treasured that correspondence. Photos are of the original volumes and Leo's inscription in The Red Sea Mountains of Egypt
