RC Concepcion does a great job of making Lightroom easy and dare I say fun to use! Highly recommended. If the Photoshop book is as good as this one I can throw out more than half of my photography books!

Useful. Easy to understand. I've been using Lightroom for years; RC covered Lightroom features I didn't know about. No weak attempts at humor, unlike some Lightroom books.

Very Useful!

New to Lightroom. Looks like it will help with learning.

Well done book for beginners and for folks familiar with Lightroom already. The author covers everything I can think of about Lightroom, from importing your photographs to printing and exporting to the web once your photos have been edited. In between those two areas, he devotes several chapters to editing. Very useful book even if you are somewhat experienced in using Lightroom.Rafael starts out with a too-true statement about photography: we will spend a lot more time organizing ourpictures than actually developing them. I know that's true in my case! What he says in the first chapter is that too many people use light room to edit but not to organize. Makes me optimistic that he will tell me how to organize photos because I'm about to start using Lightroom for that purpose. He gives helpful hints, like just keeping one catalog so that you have just one place to search for images. What I see as a bonus is that he also talks about lightroom mobile for tablets and smart phones. I didn't expect to get information on apps! Really, this section of the book is worth the price of admission. I had the app on my phone, but didn't realize how multifaceted and useful it is. You can even import photos from your desktop to work on with your phone app when you're away from home. The author has a chapter dedicated to making books in lightroom which I was very happy to see. I've been wondering how to display my photos more than one at a time and now I can.I am especially happy that he takes time to explain, step-by-step, how to import pics and organize them in light room. This will be such a useful guide as I learn more about like me.As to developing your images the author says that the first for sliders in light room are critical and that he uses only them in 80% of his image production: exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows. I would add sharpening, but otherwise agree with him.The author says he doesn't use the whites and blacks sliders very often because he relies more on the sliders I described in the above paragraph. I tend to use them only when the other adjustments aren't enough. He gives a good explanation of the clarity slider and I haven't before seen much written about that. Reading this book makes me want to run to my computer every five minutes to try the Tips he's giving. Is to color adjustment, the author says that if you are looking to change a specific color in a particular area of a photo, you are better off working in Photoshop and using layers. He gets very practical and insightful tips throughout the book.Cropping is the subject of one chapter which I liked, because I seldom see cropping tips given.Toward the end of the book, Concepcion has a good section on printing through Lightroom. He includes how to choose paper, which he says is like wine pairing for photography :-), as well as figuring out what resolution to print your photos.

RC Concepcion has a track record as really knowing his stuff when it comes to Lightroom. He also has a track record of being a superb instructor. Both of these are apparent in “The Enthusiast’s Guide to Lightroom.” I have not seen a better book for those new to Lightroom, It will really does just what the title says, namely, guide your through all of the ins and outs of this outstanding piece of software. As someone who has been using Lightroom for several years, what surprised me was how beneficial I found the book personally. No matter what your level of expertise with Lightroom, there are things that you will learn from reading this book. The book is laid out and organized beautifully. It is a breeze to make your way through it. In fact, the book is a delight to read. Although I must add, this has been universally my experience with books published by Rocky Nook. Most often where people have the most problems with Lightroom is in the Library Module. If you do not internalize the fact that Lightroom is NOT a browser based photo editor, you are in for a lot of grief. However, if you are willing to live within the constraints of Lightroom and are willing to play by its rules, the Library Module is a fantastic resource for organizing your photographs. If you stick with Lightroom, you will come to love the Library Module. RC tells you exactly what you need to know. Please pay close attention to what he says.In the Develop Module, where we do our editing, we also tend to have the most fun. And as RC shows us, Adobe is making it more and more user friendly and more and more intuitive and more and more fun. If you are using the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom, which I would highly recommend, you will regularly experience how much Lightroom continues to improve.Something that I appreciated in RC’s approach is that RC is not reticent to challenge the conventional wisdom. For example, he tells us up front that he rarely uses the Black and White Point adjustments, contrary to what most of the experts advise. Personally, I still like beginning with setting my White and Black Points and going from there. But I intend to try out RC’s workflow. RC is never high handed; he does not claim that his way is the best way, but he does let us know what it is. Similarly, he also lays out places where there are the most common differences of opinion. For example, he brings up the whole is it okay to crop or not okay to crop. He lets us know the he feels free to crop like crazy, but he reinforces that that is a personal decision.Time and again, RC offers tips that were new to me. He discusses the value of the Clarity slider, but he adds that out of focus photographs will be made worse with adding Clarity. I had not known that. His tip for bypassing the Preview dialog box with Merging Bracketed files is one that I have already incorporated. If you are a long time user of Lightroom, you may not realize the advances that have been made in some of the Modules. A notable example is the Book Module. Early on, it was not very good. But now, it is terrific. If you want to create a book, Lightroom is a great place to do it.One piece of advice I would give to both beginners and long time users is, read the entire book. Lightroom is an evolving piece of software. And it is a piece of software that integrates beautifully with Photoshop but also with all of the major photo editing software of which I am acquainted. One other thing that I would mention is that I think we all would benefit from first reading the book all of the way through and then going back and focusing on certain sections of the book, practicing what we learn.“The Enthusiast’s Guide to Lightroom” should be in every Lightroom user’s library.

This is an outstanding reference book that is geared toward the beginning Lightroom user. The author starts out by explaining the importance of properly organizing your photos and how Lightroom is a great tool to help you. It is very easy to read with great illustrations to help explain the interface. If you only read (and comprehend) the Chapter 1, you will have gone a long way into understanding Lightroom. So many photographers are so excited about developing their pictures, that they don’t spend enough time understanding what a Lightroom catalog can do to make developing easier. RC does a great job in emphasizing the importance of a catalog vs. browsing images. One thing that I appreciated was the good index that is so important in this type of book. If you don’t take the time to read this book from cover to cover (which you should), it is a great reference tool when you don’t understand a Lightroom procedure. My only negative on this book (or any tech book) is that the software is constantly evolving, so it is hard for a book to keep everything completely current. But the updates that have currently been made to Lightroom are minor and the basic concepts are the same.Highly Recommend!
