This book, if practiced deliberately, will ABSOLUTELY change your ukulele game. I've worked up a couple tunes in a week (and playing around with many more), and the way that it requires my hands to move, my brain to think, and my ears to listen have inarguably made me a better musician. I'm now re-thinking the pieces that I already know!The description and James' video say it well enough; these arrangements put emphasis on the melody of the tune, while keeping the chorded background consistent to produce a sort of "duet" played on a single instrument. The part I was most surprised by is just how accessible the arrangements are. Watching James' play is always a bit deceiving (on account of how he's on a completely different level, and all), so I figured the book would be very difficult. While the tunes aren't easy, none of them are impossible. The sheet music and tab are both laid out very well, and seem to be inviting to the player. Plus, the included lessons in the beginning of the book set the player up for success, and lay out very clearly the expected level of knowledge before starting.This certainly isn't a "starter" book, but it also doesn't pretend to be. If you are a semi-competent uke player who wants to focus on more melodic playing, buy this book and play the hell out of it.
A great addition to ukulele fingerpicking instruction. I really like (and needed) this approach. Rather than my usual noodling between melody notes, these arrangements show the player how to add a steady rhythm of bass/chords to enhance the melody and act as your own accompanist. Doable arrangements for the intermediate>advanced picker with no real knucklebusters and a nice selection of songs--no stinkers. I also like the trend of having access to songs online, so they are easily downloaded or accessed on phone. I recommend this book if you have some experience fingerpicking and playing down the neck; it's a different approach to playing--not just more arrangements to memorize.
Ofcourse James HIll Is magnificent teacher and this work shows it ! but the kindle versions I find not only this book but other music books fall far from anything good or usable ... you can read the text but you can barely make out the music sheets, the notes or the words on the pages .. as they don't enlarge as the text around them do ... unusable really in this format ... I'll order the book from now on .. when ordering music books ..
This is a marvelous collection of impeccably arranged pieces for players who are ready to move beyond just strumming chords.You can just get this collection to listen to the genre-spanning music.I'm looking forward to delving into these pieces. I don't expect it to be easy, but I like a challenge.For non-singers, this is perfect.
Beautifully harmonized. Both sheet music and tab shown but no suggested fingerings (unfortunately). Designed for high G tuning in gCEA although Hill usually plays in Canadian-style D tuning. One works for low G too, one absolutely requires high G. Mostly not arranged Campanella style (whew). Since music is shown, can sometimes rewrite tab so it works for low G (sometimes this requires totally rearranging chords). Hill plays it all with thumb on accompanying recording but can also use finger picking. Solos as he does them on YouTube recordings not shown - embellishment is up to the player. Not easy stuff - definitely for high intermediate-advanced players.
Love this book. If you are just starting out, you may want to consider the Ukulele Aerobics book too. It will start you out slow. Back to this book. Check out James' plug for this book on U tube. All the songs are very similar to what he demonstrates. To me they are perfect Ukulele songs. I am new to the Ukulele but played the banjo for about ten years ending about seven years ago. With diligence all the songs presented are playable in my opinion. Very happy with this purchase.
Some great arrangements in this book. Very tricky at first to get the whole "sound of two ukuleles" concept, but stick with it and practice, practice, practice. It's comparable to Lyle Ritz's books, but a little lighter on the jazz. Some of these arrangements are quite difficult to master, while others are rather simplistic. My favorites are "Georgia on My Mind", and a challenging version of "Summertime".
